Real Neat Blog Award

So I got a surprise when I was away on holiday – I got tagged in another bloggers post. This actually astounded me since I’ve had this blog for just over a month and I can’t even put into words how excited this made me. I’ve seen a few posts like this but I’m not really up on how they work (so if I’m doing this wrong or put the wrong title or something I’m so sorry, please comment and explain it to me!) but thankfully I was provided with some rules so I’m using them as a guideline:

  • Display the award logo – voilà:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog:

Thank you Irina! You should really check out her blog (I Drink and Watch Anime) it’s awesome, especially if you love a good anime GIF – because who doesn’t?

  • Answer the questions of the one who nominated you.

I just used the first seven questions in the post as I am not sure I could come up with any for myself, ahem …

1. When did you screw everything up, but no one ever found out it was you?

Okay so, this is a story I have been wanting to get off my chest for over a year – it’s eating me up inside. So I started a new job in September of 2016 and it was (and still is I guess) my first, proper, professional, ‘grown-up’ job at a large property company so I was crazy nervous – so nervous I forgot to take any food in with me on my first day.

Well, the secretary for my new team – let’s call her Regina Falange – was very nice and she showed me around the office and the kitchen, got me some bread from another colleague and gave me a tub of Bertolli butter so I could have toast for breakfast and go out and buy lunch later that day. All good, I was fine. A couple of days later Regina went on leave to marry her fiance Crap Bag (first name crap, last name bag) and I continued to come in, try and do my job and use the butter she gave me on that first day assuming it was just office butter.

Boy, was I wrong.

Regina was away about 2 weeks and by that time I’d used a lot of the butter – okay most – but when she got back and discovered this she came out of the kitchen into our very open plan office and angrily demanded who’d used all her butter. And I promptly hid behind my computer because I was new and really didn’t want people to hate me. Apparently, Jimmity Billy Bob from vals had a history of taking food so he got the blame – though Regina never confronted him just started putting passive aggressive sticky notes on all her food and I vowed to take the story to my grave because by the time lunch came round (when I planned to buy a new tub of said butter, fess up and explain my mistake) the story was office-wide and it felt like I’d waited too long. I didn’t screw everything up, but it felt like I had at the time.

2. What are some things that sound like compliments but are actually insults to you?

I’d have to agree with Irina – being told you’re smarter than someone thought you were (or than you look or for a girl) is pretty insulting – I especially get annoyed at the genuinely surprised expression men in my profession (which is very male-led) pull when I say something even remotely insightful or eloquent.

‘I Love How You Don’t Care How You Come Across.’

This I get a lot because I don’t a great mind to mouth filter and proverbially dig myself holes and put feet in my mouth left, right and centre – which is why I prefer writing because I can moderate and proofread my thoughts and prevent unintentional offence being caused – but it feels like an insult because no one seems t realise how hard I try to make a good impression on people. I often wonder if I’m that friend my friend have to explain before they introduce me but hey ho.

Also, even though it’s not something people say – when someone (male or female) puts their hand on my back to guide me through a door. I know it’s meant as a nice gesture and if it’s my boyfriend (who is privy to my god-awful spacial awareness) then I can understand but if it’s some middle-aged stranger I barely know at a site visit assuming the right to touch me without invitation I’m just like ‘Whoa buddy, I can get through a door unaided I’m not a child, please exit my personal bubble – thank you’.

3. What’s the closest thing to real magic in your opinion?

Pancakes (baking in general) or reading.

The former because it is a precise science that some people no matter what recipe they follow cannot fathom and others can and that is so strange and also awesome to me – and pancakes are a-maaazing. The latter because even though it’s cliche it’s hard to get how a pile of paper glued together holding different combinations of the same 26 letters can transport you to an infinite number of places and worlds.

4. What’s something your brain tries to make you do and you have to will yourself not to do it?

Talk. Constantly. I mean people sometimes (always) complain I talk too much but they have no idea what it’s like to live inside my head – it’s never-ending. I’m pretty sure I say about 30% of everything I think, at most. It takes me a minimum of two hours to fall asleep.

5. If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask?

Well, I’d say I’d ask for the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything but we already know that’s 42 so I guess I’d ask where all my missing socks go? Or where potholes come from.

6. What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?

Disclaimer: I am painfully gullible when it comes to people lying. My boyfriend has discovered this and finds it amusing to test it – not in a bad way just teasing. I think it’s because when someone just states a fact or answers me in plain English in an impassive way about a topic I have little to no knowledge on – my first thought is not to contradict them or assume they’re lying. Maybe I’m too trusting, I don’t know.

Because of this I can’t pinpoint one good one but just before I met his parents for the first time and we were going to eat dinner together he (almost) managed to convince them and his sister I was a Jewish Vegetarian who was partially lactose intolerant so as to make almost everything they’d prepared for the meal pretty much inedible to me as a practical joke. I’ve tried to tell him he’s not funny, he doesn’t believe me.

Well, luckily his mother isn’t the kind to beat around the bush so she straight up asked me if I was when I got there and all was resolved but everyone we know finds that story hilarious now which only encourages more of them to occur.

7. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week? (Time to promote some great blogs, people!)

Last week I saw Iceland and that was pretty interesting. I also saw Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, which was not.

Now, this may be just me being a nerd in my profession but I follow the blog over at Copper Seed Ltd‘s site by Victoria Richardson and she put a great post up about Stick Built and Unitised Systems last week that I personally found interesting.

Kris at the Boston Book Reader blog has been posting about a method of cutting down your TBR pile she found on Lia’s blog Lost In A Story which I found really useful also and have used lately.

And finally, even though I could probably go on for a while in this area, Juliet at Bookliterati Book Reviews wrote an interesting post about audiobooks and the prejudice some readers have against them, and reasons they might want to reconsider.

  1. Quebec! Potholes come from Quebec! I also work in a male dominated industry and those lovely gentlemen seem endlessly impressed by my ability to not forget to breath even while walking! I exagerrate – most of them are lovely but ever so often. I’m grateful my natural aura of eveilness keeps people from randomly touching me but they do hug me a lot. All the time. People do that here. It’s really uncomfortable.
Thank you for taking the time to answer – this was a super fun read! Have a fantastic Friday (I’m pretty excited for the weekend – it doesn’t take much)

  2. Congrats on the award and thanks for the nomination. I’m in the middle of the three quotes tag and so I probably won’t respond to this one in a timely manner so I’ll answer your questions here:
    1. My ‘get-pscyhed’ mix would include the Sailor Moon Theme song.
    2. I’m not really into super heroes at this point.
    3. Favourite animated movie is probably Titan AE.
    4. I like to bake chocolate brownies. I’m not good at it, but I enjoy doing it.
    5. Nothing in particular. I listen to a few from some of the bloggers I follow.
    6. Neither.
    7. Next place I want to travel to is anywhere. Probably Italy or Japan.
